His name was Banda Singh Bahadur and he had been saved from an ignoble life a few years earlier by the Tenth Guru Nanak. From that moment on his life changed forever, but more importantly so did the face of what we today know as India and Pakistan. The blueprint of the democratic era, established some three centuries ago, in a land thousands of miles from the West.
