This project initiated in Kent where a collection of books about Sikh philosophy, history, arts and Punjabi culture were donated to Gravesend Library by members of the Sikh Education Council. The donors, as well as the Library Manager felt that there was a lack of quality literature on Sikhi in public libraries including the town of Gravesend. This was somewhat surprising, as the Sikh people have a long history of residence and amicable relations in the town. Both Sikhs and non-Sikhs are generally unaware of the Sikh value system that inspired our contribution to Europe’s victory and resulting freedom in both World Wars; events which in turn enabled Sikhs to settle in the UK as resourceful, hard-working migrants and now citizens. The vast, new collection of English-language books donated by the Sikh Education Council are accessible to all from the library and should fill a void on the importance of the Sikh way of life.
